Author's Note: For [personal profile] elladifi . I hope you like it! I had the funniest time figuring out what to do with this prompt and it was really entertaining to write. Once the idea was in, the story had a mind of its own! This is my first time writing Wobell, it was certainly an experience and I might write more of this pairing in the future, I really enjoyed it. Also, sorry if it is late. Real life got in the way, and it's still the 18th my time but I know it's not in a lot of places haha. Also, yes, I suck at titles and summaries, sorry in advance!

Chris was walking home. This was not strange at all.

Chris was walking home. Now, that was a rarity.

With a busy schedule – a half-time morning job at a café, and a bartending job at night – Chris usually ran home to make the most of the free time he had to spend with Matt before he had to get ready to leave again.

But today Chris was walking because he needed the time to reflect exactly where his day started going wrong.

Despite being Christmas Eve, Chris had woken up like any other day, quickly showering and dressing to leave for his morning job at a local café. Sometimes Matt would go with him to have breakfast and chat during the small moments where there were no customers, but today his boyfriend was dead to the world, his small body spread all over the bed once Chris abandoned his space next to him. So a normal shift it was.

Chris spent most of the morning planning what he would do once he ended his shift. Matt’s family home was three hours away from their university (and their apartment), so they would leave as soon as possible to enjoy their Christmas Eve and following Christmas morning to the fullest. Chris’ boss at the bar had assured him that he could leave, and Matt, who had proposed the idea to spend Christmas with his family, had asked for a free day almost a whole month in advance, and he had no problem getting it, since he had never missed a day of work since he started his job at a restaurant.

Really, it was close to being Matt’s ideal job. He played the piano during the dinning hour at the restaurant, and since he was so good at it, his salary was good enough that he didn’t need to get another job. His only limitation was to stick to soft melodies, and his boyfriend wouldn’t complain about that.

It was thirty minutes before his shift ended that the day started to go wrong, he realized.

His phone had started buzzing on his back pocket and he had taken it out with a smile, thinking it was Matt calling him to tell him he was (finally) awake, but the smile transformed into a frown when he saw his boss’ number on the screen. He quickly picked up the call. Things went a little like this:

“Hello?”

“Yes, hello? Chris?”

“What’s up, boss?”

“Are you still in London?”

What a weird question. “Yes, I’m leaving in an hour or so.”

“Uh… listen, I know I said you could have the day off, but…” Oh, no. Please don’t... “Mark just called. He was going to take your shift. His wife went into labor, and…” Mark has a wife?! And really, today of all days?! “Of course, he needs to be there. The bar is always packed on Christmas Eve, so just one bartender won’t cut it.”

Chris sighed, knowing what was coming. “So you need me there.” He didn’t even bother to say it like a question.

His boss exhaled like Chris had just solved his day. “So you can be there at the usual hour? That’s perfect! Thank you, Chris. And don’t worry for your day off, I’ll make sure you have it for New Year’s Eve, I promise.”

“Yeah, I’ll be there. Bye.” And feeling the weight of guilt starting to hang onto his shoulders, he hung up. Matt was going to be so disappointed… or furious. At this point, Chris didn’t know which would be worse.

When Chris arrived at his apartment, he was welcomed with a hug (more like a tackle), and a quick peck to the lips. Matt was in a good mood and Chris was about to ruin it.

“Finally, you’re home!” he beamed. “You took longer than usual, didn’t you?”

Chris laughed awkwardly and scratched his neck once Matt pulled away from him. “Yeah, there were lots of people outside. You know, last minute shopping and stuff,” he shrugged.

Matt walked towards their bedroom, leaving Chris at the entrance to close the door. “Well, we are still on time!” his boyfriend yelled from the other room. “I packed your toiletries for you, so we can leave right now”

The guilt Chris felt on his shoulders became a painful clench on his stomach. “Matt…”

Matt reappeared in their living room, pulling a suitcase behind him. “What is it?”

Chris sighed. “I know I said I had the day off work tonight, but my boss called me earlier and-”

Matt’s good mood had already disappeared. “He asked you to work today”, he finished. Chris nodded slowly. “Tell me you told him you weren’t available,” he continued, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“I couldn’t decline, Matt. Mark’s wife went into labor so… what are you doing?”

Matt had grabbed the suitcase again, turning to the bedroom. “What does it look like? I’m leaving this stupid thing in the bedroom since we’re not going anywhere,” he snapped.

Chris walked towards him, raising his hands. “Matt, come on, don’t be mad. I couldn’t get out of that. We can visit your family on New Years,” he tried to calm him. “Or you can leave without me, if you want to.”

That had been the worse suggestion he could have given, because Matt turned to face him, his expression furious. “I wanted to visit my family with my boyfriend. I only asked for you to be free  for 24 hours and it seems like not even that was possible,” he scoffed and ran a hand through his black hair. “I might as well call the restaurant to see if they need me.”

“Matt, don’t be ridiculous, we still can…”

“I want to be alone,” Matt cut him off, taking the suitcase with him to the bedroom, slamming the door closed.

Chris felt awful. Matt’s tone had been final, so he knew better than trying to talk to him at the moment; that would only end with them saying things they didn’t mean to say.

He glanced at the ceiling for a few seconds before walking to the kitchen to leave Matt a note. He had a new plan.

I’ll take a walk so you can be alone

I’m sorry, I love you

Chris x

I don’t even know what this is. But it looks decent. Biscuit sticks? I hope Matt likes it. I hope he is better already; I have a lot to make up for.

Chris had wandered for a while, looking for Christmas decorations. Unsurprisingly, every store was out of product, making his mission harder to accomplish. Fortunately, he had managed to buy just enough when he received a text message from Matt.

Come back, was all it said.

So Chris had rushed home, determined to make things right. When he arrived home, he stopped before the door when he heard the soft tunes of a piano being played. The melody felt calming, if not a little nostalgic. He smiled fondly and quietly opened the door, making sure to stay silent so his boyfriend would keep playing. He left his bags in the living room and walked towards the piano where Matt was sitting.

When Matt was focused or serious, he would hunch his back to keep his face close to the keys and concentrate on the sound as he played. When he was angry or frustrated, he would throw posture and appropriateness out of the window and just play, flying hands and desperate fingers trying to let out whatever negative feeling he was holding inside. However, when Matt was reflective, like now, it was a little different.

Matt’s back was straight, his arms extended and his hands gently caressing the keys; his head turned towards the ceiling and his eyes closed.

Chris stopped behind Matt, placing his hands on his shoulders, squeezing gently to greet him. “Hey,” he whispered.

Matt sighed and smiled, his playing flowing to a natural end, the last notes resounding in their apartment. “Hey,” he greeted back, leaning his whole body on Chris, reaching up to squeeze one of his hands.

“I’m sorry, Matt,” Chris started. “I know we didn’t prepare for spending Christmas at home, but I bought some stuff to celebrate right now, we have hours before I have to work and…” he stopped talking when Matt stood up, letting his hands drop at his sides.

Matt turned around and smiled at him, kneeling on the piano bench and throwing his arms around his boyfriend’s neck to hug him tight. “It’s okay,” he murmured to Chris’ ear. Chris sighed with relief and wrapped his arms around Matt’s waist. “I called my mum,” he went on after a second. “Chatted for a bit, she helped me calm down. She even suggested you should take me out to the bar tonight to make up for it,” he laughed. “And she said we were welcome to visit on New Years,” he squeezed the taller man. “I’m sorry for lashing out. I needed time to clear my head.”

Chris pulled back a bit to look into Matt’s eyes. “It’s okay,” he replied, smiling. “I love you.”

“Love you too,” Matt beamed and stood on the floor again, pulling Chris’ head down to kiss him. Chris leaned down, following Matt’s lips, completely forgetting the piano bench. Matt huffed when Chris wasn’t close enough and pulled again, making the taller lose his balance.

“Whoa!” both of them yelled, Chris panicked at the feeling of falling and Matt surprised by the sudden weight pulling him back, forcing him to slam a hand on top of the piano, making an awful sound. Instinctively, Matt pushed at Chris’ chest, yelling, “My baby!” before any of them could react. Once the adrenaline went down, Chris was sat on the floor and Matt was inspecting his piano, playing one by one the notes he had slammed his hand into, looking for damage.

“Your baby?” Chris laughed from the floor. Matt quickly turned to see him, widening his eyes when he found him on the floor, and then started laughing. As was usual when listening to Matt’s contagious laugh, Chris soon followed him, both men laughing until they had to wipe tears from their eyes.

“Sorry,” Matt said once he calmed down. “Didn’t mean to push you that hard.”

Chris shrugged and stood up. “No problem,” he smiled. “Is the piano okay?”

Matt nodded, finally stepping away from the instrument. “Everything sounds good. But let’s keep stuff away from the piano, alright?”

“Sure.”

“So…” Matt glanced at the bags Chris had left in the couch. “What exactly did you bring?” he asked curiously.

“Right,” Chris scratched the back of his head, unconsciously playing with his curls. “I went out looking for Christmas decorations, but everything cheap was sold out and the rest was ridiculously expensive.” He walked to the bags and pulled out a few boxes. “I found some fairy lights, so we can at least light the place up, and…” he took the remaining items. “I wanted to bring biscuits or something but this looked interesting.” He passed the box to Matt.

“Pocky. Chocolate-covered biscuit sticks,” he read out loud, a smile appearing on his face. “I’ve seen this, but I’ve never tasted them.”

“Do you know if there’s a way to eat them?” Chris asked. “They look… strange, on the front of the package.”

Matt smirked and walked to stand in front of his boyfriend, opening the red box and the package inside. “Oh, there is.” He pulled one pocky out and threw the box to the couch. “Hold this for me. Don’t bite down,” he instructed.

Chris raised an eyebrow but complied, holding one end of the pocky stick between his lips. “fow do I ead fis?” he tried to speak.

“Like this,” Matt answered, holding Chris’ face and holding the other end of the stick between his own lips. He slowly started taking more of the stick, motioning with his eyes to Chris to do the same. Their lips met in the middle, Matt letting go of Chris’ face and about to pull back when Chris hugged his waist and properly kissed him. Matt managed to let out a laugh before kissing back, their lips moving together, loving but not lustful, finally feeling content. Once they pulled back, Matt ruffled Chris’ hair, giving him one last peck. “And that’s how you do it.”

Chris threw his head back and laughed. “I don’t know if that’s an actual thing or you just made it up to kiss me.”

Matt rolled his eyes. “As if I needed an excuse if I wanted to kiss you,” he said back.

Chris admitted he had a point, especially remembering he had a weak spot for Matt’s kisses. “Well, we have two whole boxes to go through,” he said casually, picking up the box.

Matt sat on the couch and patted the space next to him, showing a wide smile. “We better start, then.”

Suffice to say, they slowly but thoroughly went through the two boxes of pocky sticks, ending with swollen lips and their taste buds overwhelmed by chocolate. They tried to decorate the apartment, but Matt got creative and ended up using the fairy lights to form a heart with a MC inside (“That looks like you’re declaring your undying love to rap, Matt”), and Chris wouldn’t complain about it. (“This is our place, shut up. See if I try to be romantic to you ever again.”).

All in all, it wasn’t what they had planned, but at least they had each other.

“That looks like you’re declaring your undying love to rap, Matt” hahaha, precious! Btw, I would react the same way Matt did.

I loved the image of Matt on his knees on the piano stool, arms wrapped around Chris. Someone should draw that.

Great, sweet story. At least they have each other 😊.
